Expert interviews as a qualitative method

Expert interviews are frequently used in policy research but rarely theoretically reflected. Thus the course aims to train students in the methodology and practice of generating and analyzing “qualitative” data for policy research focusing on expert interviews. Different approaches of expert interviews and techniques of analysis will be discussed. Investigating a policy field often demands for mixed research designs, i.e. the combination of different research methods. In this course we will concentrate on combining “qualitative” research methods such as (expert-) interviews and document analysis. Combining methods implies complex methodological problems. Methodological issues focus on the epistemological and theoretical underpinnings of qualitative research. Main traditions of paradigms will be compared. A major part of the course will be dedicated to participants’ individual plans for the application of expert interviews in their research. Exercises and practical training shall help them to improve their individual research skills.
